Teen charged as adult in relative’s shooting

A Fort Wayne teenager was formally charged as an adult Thursday in the shooting of his stepgrandfather, who was critically wounded during a botched burglary last weekend.

Adam A. Contreras, 16, is accused of breaking into his stepgrandfather’s east-side home in the 2700 block of Pittsburg Street with an accomplice July 24. The teen, of the 2000 block of Thompson Avenue, stole a wallet and shot his stepgrandfather with a 9 mm handgun, court records said.

Contreras entered the home through a side door and first demanded money from his uncle, who was staying at the home.

Contreras’ uncle had no money and tried to flee out a bedroom window, court records said.

His stepgrandfather, hearing the commotion, came out of his bedroom and was met by Contreras, who then shot him, court records said.

Contreras’ stepgrandfather was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Contreras faces felony counts of burglary, robbery, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness.
