Ohio to spend less than $100K to test lakes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As blue-green algae is popping up in lakes across Ohio, the state plans to spend less than $100,000 to test water in about 10 inland lakes.

That's compared to the nearly $8 million the state plans to spend to improve and promote its lakes and stock them with fish, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

Ohio freshwater specialist Anthony Sasson says there should be more testing. He says promoting tourism and making sure the water's safe should go hand in hand.

The state Environmental Protection Agency's inland lakes program says it would cover more lakes if it had more money.

Ohio has some 400 public lakes.
