Ex-con charged in May rape, slaying at woman’s home

Kinslow

A Fort Wayne man recently released from prison after serving time for rape was arrested Tuesday and accused of the rape and slaying of a city woman in May.

Edward Kinslow, 50, of the 4600 block of East Washington Boulevard, is charged with felony murder, murder and rape, according to the Allen County Lockup. He was being held without bail.

Kinslow is accused of killing Darlene Day, according to Sgt. Carl Moore, who oversees the Fort Wayne Police Department’s homicide division. Day, 46, was found dead May 18 inside her home at 3406 Alexander St.

Police were called to Day’s home in the evening hours after someone called 911 and said Day had not been seen for two days. Day died of blunt-force trauma, authorities said.

Moore described Kinslow as an acquaintance of Day’s but would not comment on a motive for the rape and slaying.

Kinslow was expected to be released from prison this month, according to the Indiana Department of Correction website, but he was freed earlier. Indiana prisoners receive one day of credit for each day served with good behavior in prison or in jail, potentially cutting their sentences in half.

Kinslow was convicted in Allen County in 2003 of raping a female acquaintance and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. In that case, police said, Kinslow raped a woman in 2002 while showing her his new home. The woman ran out of the home naked and called 911.

When police arrived at Day’s home, they found her lying in a front room. Officers entered the home through an unsecured back door. Inside, her two dogs were with the body.

Day’s family previously said she enjoyed spending time with her sister’s grandchildren and was recently studying to get her GED. Neighbors said she was friendly and could be seen relaxing on her front porch most summer evenings.

Kinslow also served time for convictions for being a habitual traffic violator and operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Allen County. In St. Joseph County, Kinslow spent time in prison for operating while intoxicated and theft, according to Department of Correction.
