Volleyball team picked second

IPFW's women's volleyball team is supposed to be good again.

How's that for a newsflash?

After winning the Summit League tournament last year and advancing to the NCAA tournament, the conference coaches agree that the Mastodons could be the second-best team in the league, behind last year's regular-season winner North Dakota State.

IPFW got one first-place vote and finished second behind the Bison in the Summit League's preseason poll that was released Thursday.

The Mastodons finished with a 20-12 overall record and were 11-7 in conference play last season, but upset North Dakota State in the Summit tournament last year after the Bison had won 18 straight conference matches.

By the end of the season, it's a good hunch that IPFW will finish in the top four in the standings, which would put it in the four-team Summit League tourney. The winner of that will advance to the NCAA tournament again.
