Nappanee police car struck; DWI alleged

A Mishawaka man was arrested Thursday after crashing his vehicle into the back of a Nappanee police officer’s cruiser and injuring the officer, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said.

Officer Bradley Balasa was on patrol just before 1 a.m. Thursday when he noticed a vehicle speeding toward his car from behind, deputies said. Balasa tried to turn at Indiana 19 and Haney Drive when the vehicle behind him slammed into the rear of his marked cruiser. Balasa was taken to Elkhart County Hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Gavin Byall, 20, of Mishawaka, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving. He was being held in lieu of $550 bail at the Kosciusko County Jail.
