Elmhurst closure to drop stop

The closure of Elmhurst High School was tough for many, but at least it will allow drivers to move a little more quickly in the area.

Q. Has anyone suggested that the flashing stoplight at Sandpoint Road and Ardmore Avenue be removed? – Kevin Till

A. Thanks for pointing this out, Kevin, and your concerns are shared by others.

Shan Gunawardena, city traffic engineer, said the city has received numerous, similar requests to remove this light and stop signs. After examining the area, the city believes they should be taken down as well, freeing cars to flow on Ardmore.

The signs were installed because of Elmhurst High School, which closed at the end of last school year. A large number of school buses used to turn onto Ardmore, and several students needed safe passage across the road to residential developments east of Ardmore.

Because the school is no longer operating, the need for the stop has disappeared. The city hopes to remove the signs by early September.

Q. I thought they were going to repave Moeller Road in New Haven as well as add sidewalks. Is this true, and if so, when? – S.J. Meyer

A. You are correct, S.J., work is expected on that New Haven street.

Keith Schlegel, New Haven director of engineering, said Moeller will be rebuilt between Green and Hartzell roads. The project includes new pavement, a middle left-turn lane, curbs and gutters, storm sewers, a new water main and a sidewalk on the south side.

He said the city is acquiring land for the project, which will likely be awarded to a contractor late this year, with construction starting in the spring.

Oddly timed work

Monroeville Road has been closed near Heritage High School for a bridge replacement between Houk and Franke roads.

Drivers can get around the detour by using Hoffman Road to the north or Figel Road to the south.

Leesburg Road will be closed for two weeks between Main and Spring streets near the University of Saint Francis for railroad crossing repairs. Drivers will be detoured to Main, Runnion Avenue and Spring.

Both schools recently started the new school year.

Drivers getting used to the improvements to Illinois and Hadley roads face another detour. Hadley is closed between Illinois and Bass roads for a railroad crossing repair. It is supposed to reopen Sept. 10. The detour uses Bass, Thomas and Illinois roads.
