I was prepared for a horrible story of cat and mouse, or Mark and Denali, as my husband began to relay the tale of how our little pup escaped from the house.
The tale begins with vegetarian white bean chili – not the likeliest of ways to start off an escape account. I had made a huge batch and told my mother-in-law to stop by the house and pick up a few bowls for her enjoyment. When she stopped by after work on Monday, she called Mark and he went outside with the plastic container.
He was just chatting as he stood near the ajar passenger side door, which he had opened to give his mom the chili. All of a sudden, Denali wormed through the back door (that Mark forgot to close) and bounded out of the house.
This is the part of the story where I was sure was going to turn into a game of cat and mouse, with Mark chasing Denali down the street, which just happens to be busy in the after-work hours.
Alas, Denali is not a runaway-type dog. He’s a “jump in the open car door” kind of dog. That’s right. Denali bounded toward Mark, jumped in my mother-in-law’s car and proceeded to lick her face.
I’m not so sure that’s what she wanted when she stopped by for chili but at least Denali didn’t dart into traffic or run till he found new people to woo-woo at.
