More from Kelly

Here are some more items coach Brian Kelly talked about after Notre Dame's practice Wednesday.

On focusing more on the offense during practice: "When I need to talk to our defense, it is generally more in a controlled setting behind closed doors if there are some things I'm not pleased with. Relative to the motivation, relative to the quarterback position in particular, I'm going to be more hands on when it comes to the offense."

On avoiding penalties: "We got a lot of young players out there getting lined up quickly. We certainly don't want to have a great play called back because we didn't have enough guys on the line of scrimmage. Those don't sit too well with me. More today was attention to detail and making sure we were on top of them. I'm not going to let anybody slide in practice and hope it doesn't happen in a game. We are going to take care of all the things we think we have to take care of, and that is attention to detail in practice."

On the importance of limiting turnovers on offense and creating them on defense: "It is the center of my attention when it comes to our goals. When you look at our goal boards, the common theme is turnover-take away. In my opinion, it impacts the game and the outcome more than any other statistic. It is something we talk about all the time in terms of how we take care of the football."

On freshman receiver Bennett Jackson: "He's really fast. He can take the top off of coverages like no player we have. He's got to catch the ball more consistently. It makes no sense to run down the field and drop the ball. He's coming along, we are going to play him. He's involved in special teams right now, but he's got a speed element that as we go through 12 and 13 games, he's a guy if we keep fresh is going to be able to blast down the field."
