INDIANAPOLIS – As if the tinder-dry conditions across much of Indiana aren’t enough evidence, the National Weather Service says it measured the least rainfall on record for the month of August in Indianapolis.

The weather service recorded 0.37 inches of August rain at its station near Indianapolis International Airport, breaking the 0.42-inch mark set in 1897. The agency says less than an inch of rain fell for the month throughout much of central and western Indiana.

Other parts of the state were dry as well. Evansville had 0.84 of an inch of rain and South Bend saw 0.92 inches, although neither set monthly records. Fort Wayne, meanwhile, had 3.55 inches of rain for the month.

The dry August followed what was the third wettest June for Indianapolis with 9.73 inches of rain.
