Attorney accused of smuggling heroin into prison using condoms

TERRE HAUTE – An investigator says an Illinois defense attorney facing federal charges for trying to smuggle heroin-filled condoms into an Indiana federal prison claims to have done it several times before.

Sixty-eight-year-old Robert Drew of Marion, Ill., is accused of attempting to provide a prohibited object to an inmate at the federal prison in Terre Haute last Saturday.

Online court documents do not indicate whether he has an attorney. Calls to his home seeking comment went unanswered.

Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley says known cases involving lawyers sneaking drugs or other contraband into prisons are rare.

She says all visitors to federal prisons are required to be scanned by a metal detector when entering, though pat-downs are not done.
