Starless Colts fall in finale

– Cedric Peerman had a 93-yard touchdown run and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Indianapolis Colts 30-28 on Thursday night in the preseason finale.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning didn’t play, and most of Indianapolis’ starters took the night off. Curtis Painter got the start and completed 9 of 20 passes for 114 yards. Backup Tom Brandstater completed 10 of 18 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns, all to rookie Brandon James.

It’s the sixth winless preseason in Colts history.

“I’m excited about where we are,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. “We certainly have been improving all along, getting a little bit better. Overall, I think we made good progress.”

BROWNS 13, BEARS 10: Montario Hardesty, Cleveland’s highly touted rookie running, hurt his left kneed in the second quarter of Cleveland’s home win. Hardesty will undergo an MRI today. Fellow rookie Colt McCoy got his first pro start and went 13 of 13 for 131 yards in two-plus quarters. Todd Collins, recently signed by Chicago to back up Jay Cutler, completed 10 of 15 for 139 yards and a 15-yard TD pass to tight end Greg Olsen for the Bears.

VIKINGS 31, BRONCOS 24: Denver rookie Tim Tebow was 12 for 16 for 167 yards and one touchdown, but the Vikings forced four first-half turnovers in Minneapolis. The Vikings held out 20 of their 22 starters. Brett Favre watched in a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers.

GIANTS 20, PATRIOTS 17: Eli Manning and Tom Brady were solid in their final tuneups for the regular season. And Rhett Bomar may have nailed down the job as the New York Giants’ backup quarterback, throwing a 60-yard scoring pass to Duke Calhoun with 1:49 to play as the Giants rallied at East Rutherford, N.J.

LIONS 28, BILLS 23: Matthew Stafford had an interception returned for a touchdown, but third-stringer Drew Stanton threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes to lift host Detroit. Elmhurst graduate and former Indiana star James Hardy had three receptions for 23 yards for Buffalo.

JAGUARS 13, FALCONS 9: Fullback Brock Bolen scored on a 16-yard run, and Josh Scobee kicked two field goals to lift the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla. Atlanta’s Chris Redman started in place of Matt Ryan and completed 15 of 22 passes for 142 yards.

STEELERS 19, PANTHERS 3: Byron Leftwich, expected to replace Ben Roethlisberger during his suspension, sprained his left knee in the second quarter as host Pittsburgh beat Carolina. Leftwich will be out indefinitely with what some teammates called a “serious” injury.

JETS 21, EAGLES 17: Michael Vick led host Philadelphia to a field goal in two series in his first start in four years, and Kurt Coleman scored on two fumble returns for New York. Jets backup QB Mark Brunell’s threw a 51-yard touchdown to Santonio Holmes in to put the Jets ahead to stay. Neither team used its starters.

COWBOYS 27, DOLPHINS 25: David Buehler kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired for host Dallas in a game played almost entirely with backups.
