FORT WAYNE – We provide a follow-up to last weeks lead item after some readers expressed concern with the removal of an all-way stop near the closed Elmhurst High School.
Q. I hope the traffic engineers rethink plans to remove the flashing light at Elmhurst. The nearly 150 school buses that enter/exit are still there. Even with that flashing light, it is often difficult to pull out onto Ardmore. – Martin Loy
A. Unfortunately, Martin, the plan to remove the stop still stands.
Krista Stockman, spokeswoman for Fort Wayne Community Schools, said the district does not expect the change to cause problems with its southern transportation center.
She said that with the stop in place, cars get bunched up on Ardmore, causing traffic concerns. With the stop removed, traffic will better flow along Ardmore, making it even easier for the school buses to maneuver. Although the high school is closed, the district still houses its buses for the southern half of the district on the site.
Q. Who is the go-to person for suggesting a sign at Jefferson and Getz telling people to not block the intersection? – Barbara A. Schaaf
A. Well, Barbara, I hope by writing me you know this is the place to go for such requests.
Shan Gunawardena, city traffic engineer, said the short distance between the signals on Getz Road at Covington Road and Jefferson Boulevard creates this problem during peak hours. Obviously, drivers should be aware not to enter an intersection if traffic is backed up, regardless of whether they have a green light.
To help remind drivers, the city will install a Do Not Block Intersection sign next to the traffic signal.
Adams Center closure
Adams Center Road will be closed Tuesday for 1,000 feet south of the intersection with Indiana 930 to widen and pave the street.
The 90-day closure will allow improvements for the upcoming extension of Maplecrest Road, which will connect with Adams Center. The official detour is Meyer Road south of Indiana 930 and Moeller Road west of Adams Center.
Aboite barrier added
The Fort Wayne Board of Works this week approved adding a $74,300 median to the Aboite Center Road project from the intersection with Jefferson Boulevard to 800 feet west.
The project will protect turns into the new medical park on the corner, but it will not prevent people from turning onto Rosewood Drive. The median is not expected to delay the projects mid-October completion date.
Radio Sage
The bonus audio question this week comes from Carol Wellman, who asks about the intersection of St. Joe Center and Lahmeyer roads. The segment originally aired Friday on WOWO and can be heard online at www.journalgazette.net/roadsage.
