6 escape south-side fire

Six people at a south-side home were alerted to a fire by a smoke detector and escaped the house without injury early Saturday morning, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters were called at 12:45 a.m. to 4333 Avondale Dr.

When they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the one-story house. Firefighters had the blaze under control in 16 minutes.

The living room and kitchen area sustained heavy fire damage.

Cause of the fire is under investigation, firefighters said.
