Fire destroys Indianapolis apartment building

INDIANAPOLIS – Firefighters are battling a blaze that has destroyed an Indianapolis apartment building but caused only minor injuries.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokeswoman Rita Burris said firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday morning to find flames and smoke billowing from the three-story wood frame building. Part of the building has collapsed but the fire is under control.

She said all but three of the 20 residents who were home at the time of the blaze got out of the building on their own. Firefighters had to help a couple and their 2-week-old infant child escape from the top floor.

The child was taken to Methodist Hospital, treated for smoke inhalation and released.
