Washington outfielder Nyjer Morgan was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for three separate incidents over the past week. And six players, the managers of Washington and Florida and a coach were cited after a review of Wednesday nights brawl in Miami.
For Florida, pitcher Chris Volstad was suspended six games, pitcher Alex Sanabia five, first baseman Gaby Sanchez three and manager Edwin Rodriguez one. Volstad and Rodriguez also were fined, as was pitcher Jose Veras. For Washington, pitcher Doug Slaten and third base coach Pat Listach were suspended three games and manager Jim Riggleman two. Riggleman and Listach also were fined.

Nationals rookie Stephen Strasburg had reconstructive elbow surgery that could keep him out of the starting rotation until 2012. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he had lunch with Ryne Sandberg but did not formally interview the Hall of Famer for the managers job. Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto missed the series in St. Louis, attending to what was called a family emergency in the Dominican Republic. Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia had season-ending surgery for a broken bone in his left foot.
