Detector helps occupants get out

Six people escaped a house fire at 4333 Avondale Drive early Saturday after being alerted to the blaze by the home’s smoke detector, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the one-story home just before 1 a.m. and found fire in the living room and kitchen area. The fire was brought under control in 16 minutes, according to the fire department. The entire house sustained heavy smoke damage, while the kitchen and living room had heavy fire damage.

No one was injured in the fire, and its cause is under investigation.
