W. Lafayette water customers may pay for hydrants

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A proposal to shift the costs of renting fire hydrants from the city to customers is raising questions about fairness in West Lafayette.

The city says it can no longer afford to use tax money to pay the cost of renting hydrants from Indiana American Water Co.

The city will pay about $198,000 for hydrants this year, but an increase in the monthly hydrant rental cost will boost that to more than $266,000 in 2011.

Mayor John Dennis tells the Journal & Courier of Lafayette that it’s a fairness issue because tax-exempt entities get city fire protection but don’t contribute to the hydrant rental costs.

Some city leaders say residents are already facing a schools levy and a possible stormwater fee and that the city should not add another bill.
