IU, Notre Dame offer car sharing service

INDIANAPOLIS – The college road trip is getting a little easier for some Indiana students without cars.

Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame are partnering with Zipcar, a Massachusetts-based car-sharing service that allows students, faculty and others to rent a vehicle for as little as an hour or as long as a few days.

Zipcars are available for students 18 and older, while many traditional car rental services require drivers to be 21 or 25 years old to rent a car.

To use Zipcars, students pay an annual membership fee and can reserve cars for rates as low as $8 an hour, which includes gas and insurance.

IU and Notre Dame officials say the partnership will help encourage students to leave their cars at home, which could ease campus traffic.
