Columbia City boys win tennis event

Columbia City defeated Fairfield 3-2 in the finals and won the four-team Wawasee Tennis Invitational.

Derek Hinen won his match at No. 3 singles Saturday, defeating Jordan Hochstetler 6-1, 7-5, while the doubles teams of Alan Murphy and J.T. Biggs, and Travis Johnson and Cole Craven, also won their matches.

Hinen remained unbeaten this season, defeating Wawasee’s David Toernes 7-6, 6-2, as the Eagles won the round 4-1. And Hinen downed Jimtown’s Dan Gongwer 6-3, 6-0, in a 5-0 victory for the Eagles.

CARROLL INVITATIONAL: Indianapolis Cathedral won the eight-team event, defeating Plainfield 4-1 in the finals.

Canterbury won the third-place match 4-1 over Delta, led by Patrick Downs’ 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles, the Cavaliers’ Davis Huber defeated Bond St. John 6-2, 6-4.
