Sox earn sweep of doubleheader in Boston

– Gavin Floyd gave up five hits in six innings, Carlos Quentin hit a double and triple and the Chicago White Sox swept their day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox with a pair of 3-1 wins on Saturday.

Floyd (10-11) allowed Boston’s only run of the second game on a single in the fifth inning by Marco Scutaro, who also drove in Boston’s only run of the opener.

The White Sox extended their winning streak to five games and gained a half-game in the AL Central. They trail division leader Minnesota, which beat the Texas Rangers 12-4, by 3 1/2 games.

Manny Ramirez, in his first games against his former team since joining Chicago on waivers Tuesday, went 2 for 4 in the first game and 1 for 4 with two strikeouts and a soft lined single to right in his last at bat in the second.

In the opener, John Danks (13-9) pitched seven strong innings and Paul Konerko went 3 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

“PK’s the key to the White Sox right now,” Guillen said. “Having Manny here helps, you know what I mean? I think the players go out there with more confidence. They might think they have to pitch to them because Manny’s right behind him, but I think we won those games because we got clutch hitting and we pitched well.”

TWINS 12, RANGERS 4: Jim Thome homered twice in Minnesota’s home win, moving past Mark McGwire for ninth place on baseball’s all-time list.

Thome went deep for the 583rd time in his career leading off the third inning, a shot to the second deck above right field estimated at 449 feet. Then with two on and two outs in the fourth, Thome’s full-count drive into the bullpen behind left-center made it 9-0 and gave him No. 584.

TIGERS 6, ROYALS 4: In Kansas City, Mo., Austin Jackson hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth for his third hit of the game to help Detroit reach .500 for the first time since Aug. 24. Rick Porcello (8-11) pitched seven innings to earn the win.

YANKEES 7, BLUE JAYS 5: Marcus Thames launched a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and New York won at home to stretch its winning streak to a season-high eight games.

With the best record in baseball but only a slim lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay, the Yankees won for the 14th time in 18 games and improved to 6-0 on their 10-game homestand.

ATHLETICS 3, ANGELS 1: Trevor Cahill (15-6) pitched six scoreless innings to become Oakland’s first 15-game winner in three years with a home victory.

Mark Ellis, Daric Barton and Cliff Pennington all drove in runs for Oakland, which won its second straight following a four-game losing streak. Torii Hunter homered for the Angels, who have lost nine of 12.

ORIOLES 8, RAYS 4: Nick Markakis homered and scored twice to back an effective pitching performance by Jeremy Guthrie as host Baltimore helped manager Buck Showalter pick up his 900th career win.

Matt Wieters and Felix Pie each had two hits and two RBI for the Orioles, who broke a three-game skid.
