The eighth annual Military Appreciation Party will be Saturday at the Allen County Fairgrounds.

Current soldiers, veterans and the public are invited to the free event, sponsored by Dimension Ford, from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Indiana

Shipments climb at Great Lake harbor

The state’s port authority says shipments at the Port of Indiana in Burns Harbor rose 52 percent in 2009 in a sign of better economic conditions.

A report on activity at Burns Harbor and Indiana’s two Ohio River ports shows the three ports brought in about $5.418 billion to the state economy in 2009. Burns Harbor accounted for about 65 percent of the total economic activity.

Hoosier honors ancestor in 10K run

In 1808, John Colter was stripped of his clothes by a Blackfoot tribe in western Montana and told to run for his life, escaping after being chased on foot for five miles.

On Saturday, Colter’s great-great-great-great-grandson – Tim Coulter – competed in Colter’s Run, a 10-kilometer event in Bozeman, Mont., started in 1976.

Tim Coulter is from St. Wendel, Ind., about 10 miles northwest of Evansville. He finished the event in 1 hour, 26 minutes, about 40 minutes behind the winner.

Ohio

Voters favor GOP, paper’s poll says

A poll by the Columbus Dispatch says Republican candidates have double-digit leads in the Ohio races for governor and U.S. Senate.

The Dispatch’s poll found that GOP governor hopeful John Kasich leads Gov. Ted Strickland by 12 points, and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman has a 13-point advantage over his Democratic opponent Lee Fisher.

The Dispatch polled 1,622 registered voters who said they intend to vote in the 2010 election.

The poll has a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
