Suspect ID'd in double slaying

A man suspected of killing two senior citizens in northern Michigan and later found shot at Chain O’ Lakes State Park has been identified.

Indiana Conservation officers and the Noble County Sheriff’s Department are investigating what they said appears to be the suicide of Louis E. Tantalo, 50, of Johnnesburg, Mich.

According to investigating conservation officer Rodney Clear, a female visitor first notified park employees early Sunday afternoon about a man in a vehicle who might need assistance.

Tantalo was found in a lot near the Glacier Ridge Pavilion with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a written statement from conservation officers. He was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital, where he died shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

According to an Associated Press story, authorities in northern Michigan have identified Tantalo as a suspect in the death of a 70-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman over the Labor Day weekend.

The killings were in Lewiston, 90 miles south of the tip of the Lower Peninsula.

The Montmorency County Sheriff’s Department in Michigan said deputies were called to a home where the bodies were found about 3 p.m. Monday.

The department said Tantalo was a relative of one of the victims.
