One of the biggest surprises – and announcements – from Mayor Tom Henry’s State of the City address had little to do with city government at all.ELKHART – The Indiana attorney general’s office has filed a lawsuit to freeze the assets of a former state police post commander who resigned after being questioned about missing money.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Elkhart Circuit Court against former Lt. Dallard Tackett. The attorney general’s office said auditors have found Tackett diverted at least $89,000 meant for a state fund to pay for equipment purchases and officer training.
Tackett oversaw troopers who patrol the Indiana Toll Road from a post near Elkhart from 1999 until he resigned Aug. 20.
Elkhart County prosecutor’s office investigator Bill Wargo told the South Bend Tribune that the office is awaiting more information from state police before deciding whether to file criminal charges.
