Astronaut to speak at education partnership awards program

NASA astronaut Michael T. Good will deliver the keynote address at the Champions for Children's Education Awards and Silent Auction, sponsored by Allen County Education Partnership, on Sept. 16 at Ceruti's Summit Park, 6601 Innovation Blvd.

The awards ceremony, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will honor Ian Rolland as the 2010 Dr. Maxine Huffman Community Champion, named for the partnership's curricula developer. Julie Christian, third-grade teacher at St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, and Linda Vernasco, kindergarten teacher at Cedar Canyon Elementary School, will be recognized as the 2010 teacher champions.

Good, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, is a veteran of two space flights – in 2009 to repair the Hubble space telescope and this year to deliver supplies to the international space station.

A silent auction and raffle will be held 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 each and include an appetizer buffet and cash bar. Guests may register at www.abouteducation.org or by calling Lisa Fabian at 423-6447.

Good's stay in Fort Wayne also will include visits Sept. 17 to Franke Park Elementary School and Queen of Angels School.
