Survey finds marijuana use up among Indiana youths

BLOOMINGTON – An annual survey of alcohol and drug use by Indiana youths found a slight drop in those who had ever smoked cigarettes but that more admitted using marijuana in the past month.

The survey released Wednesday by Indiana University's Indiana Prevention Resource Center reported 19.2 percent of high school seniors with monthly marijuana use – up from 16.2 percent in 2008.

Cigarette use at anytime among seniors was reported at 43.7 percent, down from 46.9 percent a year earlier.

Center director Ruth Gassman says the increase in marijuana use might show a lack of concern about its dangers.

Researchers questioned more than 169,000 students in grades six through 12 at 523 public and private schools for the survey.
