About the weather

With a threat of rain storms Saturday in South Bend, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly used some practice time to prepare for the elements.

Kelly said on Thursday the team practices wet-ball drills with the special teams and seven-on-seven. But he isn't too concerned about playing is less than ideal weather.

"We have to play in the elements," Kelly said. "I think you have to practice them, but I don't think I over coach it. I think we've got great balance in our offense and defense, that if we have to take shape differently because of the elements, we can do that. Thirteen years of being on Lake Michigan at Grand Valley State, I think I've seen every kind of weather pattern that has blown through here. So I'm not a rookie when it comes to that."

Kelly said he prefers to keep his team outside for practice during a week when the weather is bad.

"Unless the conditions are such that we can't get our work done," Kelly said. "If it's rainy, but it's not sideways or such that the practice just cannot be productive, then I'll go inside. I like to be out in the elements, because we play in the elements. I think our kids need to have that toughness to them when they go into a ball game."
