‘Breakfast Club’ star tapped for Tapestry

Ringwald

– Molly Ringwald will be the keynote speaker at next year’s Tapestry: A Day for Women, event organizers announced Thursday.

The actress will speak at the IPFW fundraiser April 29 at Memorial Coliseum.

Famous for her roles in 1980s movie classics “Pretty in Pink,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles,” Ringwald currently stars in the ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and is the best-selling author of “Getting The Pretty Back: Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick.”

She will give a presentation titled “Pretty is a state of mind: Empowering women to be their true best selves.” Tickets go on sale in February, and the cost has not yet been decided.

“Molly is a contemporary woman,” Tapestry project manager Ruth Stone said. “She’s working, and she’s sort of trying to reinvent herself, which is something women do all the time. … We think her perspective will resonate with our guests.”

The annual Tapestry fundraiser gives local women a day to take time off, come together, learn something new and raise money for scholarship recipients. This year’s speaker was celebrity chef Sandra Lee.

The Tapestry Parkview Health Sciences Scholarships were established in 2002 to provide merit-based scholarships to IPFW students in the College of Health and Human Services, according to IPFW.

More than 7,700 women have attended the event since it started. To date, more than $370,000 has been raised to support scholarships.

This year, the scholarship fund gave $28,000 split among five scholarship recipients. To qualify for scholarships, students must have high academic standards, commitment to high-quality professional service, demonstrated responsibility for their own actions and education, and strong involvement in community and professional activities.
