Elston update

Notre Dame will again be without defensive line and special teams coach Mike Elston this week, coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday.

Elston missed Saturday's loss to Michigan because of an illness.

"All I can you tell is he is still not with us," Kelly said.

Tight ends coach Mike Denbrock took the lead in coaching the special teams during Saturday's game, with assistance from outside linebackers coach Kerry Cooks, running backs coach Tim Hinton and offensive line coach Ed Warinner.

Kelly said he thought the Irish did a good job on special teams, and it looks like they will have to use the team coaching method for special teams again going into Saturday's road game against Michigan State.

"They really picked up for one of the best special teams coaches in the country and did a very, very good job," Kelly said. "I think there is a lot of confidence there that we can continue on that."

As for this week, the defensive line will be coached by Denbrock, and Lorenzo Guess, who is the assistant director of strength and conditioning, will take over the tight ends coaching duties, Kelly said.

Guess "coached the tight ends for me last year at the University of Cincinnati. So we should have a pretty seamless transition," Kelly said. "That is just for a short time. We're expecting coach Elston will be back with us pretty soon."

During the game against Michigan, defensive backs coach Chuck Martin and Cooks handled Denbrock's sideline duties, and when Elston wasn't at practice on Thursday and Friday, defensive graduate assistant Jon Carpenter handled the defensive line coaching duties, Kelly said.
