Rapheal Davis on Blackmon, Beacham

South Side junior Rapheal Davis and Bishop Luers freshman James Blackmon Jr. used to be teammates at Memorial Park Middle School and will be foes when the season starts in November.

They are also connected in other ways as Blackmon broke Davis' all-time scoring record at Memorial Park, they work out together almost daily and they also committed early in the recruiting process – to two in-state rivals, Davis to Purdue and Blackmon to Indiana.

Davis, who committed after his freshman season, said he wasn't surprised to see Blackmon commit even before his first year with the Knights.

"I wasn't surprised," Davis said Tuesday when Purdue coach Matt Painter was watching him play during the Archers' open gym. "We had talked right before they offered him about it."

Also, Davis said he didn't know what Harding sophomore V.J. Beacham would do after being offered a scholarship to Purdue but hasn't made a commitment.

"He might wait it out," Davis said of Beacham. "He doesn't really care all that much about staying close (to Fort Wayne)."
