Backup plans

Kelly is getting more comfortable with his team's backup plan if quarterback Dayne Crist is knocked out of a game like he was last Saturday.

Kelly said Tommy Rees and Nate Montana have responded well in practice this week and are making strides in a package designed for them.

"I think the work that we have done with them this week in creating an offensive package is aggressive but takes advantage of their skill set is looking pretty good," Kelly said. "We are still a work in progress there. I've been pleased with the progress."

As far as who would be first in line to replace Crist if needed, Kelly was mum.

"Hmm, not yet, but I will let you know," Kelly said with a smile.

Mike Golic Jr. has also made strives in his role as backup center.

Golic moved into the No. 2 spot behind Braxston Cave after Dan Wenger suffered his second concussion in less than a month.

Kelly said Golic's performance as kept Cave on his toes.

"We are challenging Braxston Cave to play better," Kelly said. "(Golic is) really a guy that we need to get more reps. (Backup left guard) Chris Watt has gotten some reps as well. We need to keep a competitive situation there with Wenger still out.

"Golic has made very good improvement, but he would because he's getting more work. He didn't get much work when Wenger was in there."
