Ivy Tech serving up global fare

Travel the world, culinary style, without ever leaving the city.

The feast begins Thursday, when Ivy Tech Community College, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., kicks off its fall “Special Cuisines” dinner series.

Here is the schedule:

Thursday: French buffet

Sept. 30: Mexican/South American buffet

Oct. 28: German dishes

Nov. 4: Scandinavian specials

Nov. 11: Thai menu

Dec. 2: Tapas-style buffet

The dinners are $20.

Seating is available between 5 and 6:30 p.m. each date. Call 480-4133 to reserve a slot.

The meals are part of a class in which students plan, create and execute menus that represent countries from around the world. They also rotate through various positions in the kitchen and dining room during the semester.

Chili Fest to heat up Headwaters Park

Because chili season is just around the corner, cooks are preparing to gather at Headwaters Park with their best recipes.

The fifth annual Chili Fest will be Oct. 2, when competitors will give out samples and earn Chili Appreciation Society International points.

Categories are red, white, chili verde, beans, salsa, restaurant and alumni.

The public tasting event is noon to 4 p.m.

Some competitors also kick it up a notch by dressing in costume and decorating their booths.

Admission is free, but a tasting ticket is $5 and allows you to try all the entries and vote for the People’s Choice award. Voting ends at 3:30 p.m.

Children age 13 and younger can get in free. But anyone 20 or younger must be accompanied by a parent.

Church taking orders for Greek treat bake sale

It’s never too early to start planning for the holidays.

That’s why Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is already taking orders for its annual bake sale sponsored by Daughters of Penelope & Philoptochos.

The homemade treats include sweet bread ($4), baklava ($12 for 20 pieces or $21 for 40), cheese or spinach pites ($8 for 12, frozen and ready to bake) and a Greek cookbook ($20).

Orders will be accepted until Oct. 24. But they must be paid in advance, with cash or check, before the pickup dates.

Pickup dates at the church, 110 E. Wallen Road, will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 19 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 20.

Garrett steakhouse adds scallops, vegetarian dish

Shorty’s Steakhouse in Garrett has several new dishes, including tenderloin tips with fettuccine, mushrooms, spinach, toasted almonds and a blue cheese béchamel sauce.

You can get the scallops with orzo, capers, shallots and Parmesan, or seared with orange-ginger glaze, wilted spinach and pecans.

A new vegetarian dish is orzo with leeks, portobello mushrooms, spinach, shallots and roasted red pepper béchamel sauce. The spice-crusted tuna (with fennel, coriander, pepper, chili powder and cumin) is paired with wilted spinach, capers and wasabi.

Prices for the new dishes are $11 to $19.

Shorty’s, which bills itself as a non-smoking restaurant, is at 127 N. Randolph St., Garrett.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.

•Big Apple Bagels, a national chain that has a location in Warsaw, will move into the Shoppes at Illinois Road, according to a sign. The menu also includes sandwiches, salads, soups, muffins and coffee.

•Culver’s, 3510 E. Dupont Road, is having its “Day of Caring” from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today. It will donate 10 percent of the day’s sales to Parkview Hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
