The Komets are preparing for their first preseason game, Thursday against the Dayton Gems at Memorial Coliseum.
What coach Al Sims wants is for players to stand out, particularly the young ones.
"I think we're looking for guys to stand out," Sims said. "I told most of the kids that you can't just blend in during exhibition games. You have to make me and (assistant coach Gary Graham) go, 'Who did that? Who was that?' Maybe Gary then says, 'Oh, that was (Brad) Pawlowski.'"
There are likely going to be nine players who will be in the lineup that have never played for Sims before. Those are the ones who must shine, in particular.
"It doesn't have to be a fight," Sims said. "But if it's a fight, that's great, or a blocked shot, big hit or somebody doing a great job forechecking, you have to stand out from the crowd. Most of the kids know that's what we're looking for -- people who make us come out of our seats."
- Check out the video on the top right, from a Hamilton vs. Binghamton game. Not sure this guy would try that move in a regular-season game. Also not sure why this was effective. The goalie should have poke checked it away.
