Freshmen still in play

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said there are freshmen that could still get into the mix this season even though they haven’t played in the first five games.

Kelly said receiver Daniel Smith, offensive linemen Christian Lombard and Alex Welch could get into the offensive mix, and that defensive end Kona Schwenke has moved up to “varsity.”

“We’re still kind of fluid in that situation, but those are probably some of the names,” Kelly said.

Kelly said a decision to preserve eligibility would come around the bye week, which is after a home game Oct. 30 against Tulsa.

“That’s close to where we would draw the line in the sand, provided we don’t have catastrophic injuries at a particular position,” Kelly said. “But if we’re talking about a luxury situation, probably by the bye week we’d make that decision.”
