Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly can see Boise State playing for a national title this season.
But the Broncos (5-0) will need some help.
Kelly’s voting reflected the top three in the USA Today’s coaches poll with Ohio State (6-0) at No. 1, Oregon (6-0) No. 2 and Boise State at No. 3. That is the same order of The Associated Press Top 25, which doesn’t factor into the BCS standings.
“I think if Boise continues to win and Ohio State or Oregon win out, then Boise State could be in trouble there because of the schedule.” Kelly said during his Sunday teleconference. “But if somebody slips up, and they are undefeated, they should play for the national championship in my estimation.”
Kelly said he doesn’t think Nebraska, which is fourth in the coaches poll and fifth in the AP, has done enough to jump Boise State. But with the Cornhuskers slated to play Texas (Saturday), No. 20 Oklahoma State (Oct. 23) and No. 21 Missouri (Oct. 30), the coach’s mind could be changed.
But for now, Kelly said Boise State is the next team in if Ohio State or Oregon gets tripped up.
“My feeling is Boise State is in that slot, and the top two dogs are going to have to stay undefeated or they are going to get in the national championship game from my perspective,” Kelly said.
