Following up on scheduling balance

You will recall that the Komets will have the luxury of playing 36 games at Memorial Coliseum this season, while everyone else (except Evansville) only gets 33 games at home.

Read this to refresh your memory.

I went to Central Hockey League commissioner Duane Lewis for comment and he said part of the issue was that the Komets' lease with the Coliseum called for more than 33 games, since they had planned on being in the IHL this season.

Lewis said similar problems were being faced by all the IHL teams absorbed by the CHL, and that other teams almost wound up playing unbalanced schedules.

"We went through a lot of issues in regards to the numbers of games, based on the differences with the leagues," Lewis said. "There was an issues with the leases of teams having a number of games that had to be fulfilled. In this case, Evansville was willing to move some games. We actually thought this would happen more often, there were a lot of scenarios looked at, but this was the only one that needed to be done."

Personally, I don't buy this. Teams change leagues all the time, yet Fort Wayne is the first team in history that couldn't alter its lease? They are the tenant in the building. This whole thing just doesn't hold much water with me. If they worked it out in Quad City, Bloomington and Dayton, they could have here.

Anyway, to his credit, Lewis said "this is not ideal but we did what we had to do to make the two leagues come together smoothly."

He also said there will understandably be backlash if, say, the Komets squeak into the playoffs by a point, aided by having the extra home games.

  • Lewis said there should be a decision made on Brad MacMillan by Wednesday. I expect he gets a huge suspension for mangling Dave Van Drunen in an exhibition game Saturday.
