I cannot believe this is the fourth time I've come to a Komets game to see a new league. I first got on the beat in 1997, when they were in the old IHL.
Then I saw the United Hockey League, the new IHL and now the Central Hockey League.
I must say, I didn't see much of a difference tonight. It was a touch faster, but only a touch. And if Rapid City is the best team in the league -- it is the defending champion -- I'm not expecting the CHL product to be that much different.
But it's only one night, so let's take it as that.
I talked to a lot of players. Some agreed with me, that it was about the same. Some said it was much faster.
I guess we'll just need time to figure it out, eh?
- Really, only two players stood out for me on the Komets' side: Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock and Nick Boucher. Other than that, the guys have to step it up. Remember, Columbus of the NHL will probably be assigning a player or two here, so jobs aren't safe. Not that they would have been after a 4-0 loss.
- I learned this tonight: The CHL prohibits off-ice officials from blogging about teams, or going public with comments on blogs. Kudos to the CHL. I have been meaning to write about this for a while, and I am not calling out anyone in particular, because I see this happen in cities all over. I just think, if you're an off-ice official, you must appear impartial, and commenting about all types of things on blogs muddies that water. We all know that off-ice officials are giving up their time, and are fans of hockey at heart, but it was asking for trouble. I'm sure a clever off-ice official could still blog under a pseudonym, if he/she really wanted. Just saying.
- Remember my twitter account www.twitter.com/jgkomets or @jgkomets. I do updates during the games and during the week, and it's a good way to keep abreast of what's going on.
- Thoughts on the appeal of the Brad MacMillan suspension? Again, I haven't seen video with my own eyes, so I'm reserving judgment a little bit. But it sounds as if the Eagles should just take their lumps. Don't think for a second that MacMillan's past transgressions aren't factoring into this, too. They know he's been suspended a bunch before. Right or wrong, it's being considered.
