Instant Recall

Children's aromatherapy kits recalled again for explosion risk

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a second recall of 516,000 Spa Factory Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits due to potential explosion and projectile hazards.

Consumers should immediately take the toy's jars and caps away from children and dispose of any jar lids that don't have vent holes, the commission said. Only jars that have lids with vents should be used.

The children's product was originally recalled in January 2009. Since that time, there have been additional injuries caused by the kits. The kits are made by JAKKS Pacific.

Pressure from the buildup of carbon dioxide in the jars of Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies that come with the kits can cause the unvented lids to blow off. Additionally, the mixture of water with the Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies can create citric acid that could hurt a person's eyes if the jars explode.

As of January 2009, the commission received 88 reports of exploding jars with 13 injuries to children.

The kits were sold at Sam's Club, Walmart, Target and other stores nationwide from August 2008 to August 2010. They sold for between $13 and $50 and continue to be available in some stores.

Consumers can receive free jar lids with vent holes by calling JAKKS toll-free at 1-877-875-2557 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fort Wayne time Monday through Friday or by visiting the firm's website at
