The Komets' tenure in the Central Hockey League is off to an inauspicious beginning.

A 2-1 overtime loss to the Arizona Sundogs at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Ariz., on Friday night, dropped them to 0-1-1 in their first CHL season.

It was the Komets' first trip for a game out West since 1999 in the old IHL.

Forward Mark Kolanos scored with a shot from the left circle, during a power play 1:44 into extra time, for the victory. It was Kolanos' second goal of the night, and it came with Sean O'Connor in the penalty box for elbowing.

It was a busy night for referee Jon McIsaac, who assessed 81 penalty minutes and 19 power plays.

The Komets were 1 for 7. The Sundogs were 2 for 12.

Fort Wayne had opened its season last Saturday with a 4-0 loss at Memorial Coliseum to the Rapid City Rush, defending champions of the CHL.

Fort Wayne, which won the last three championships of the IHL, took 78 minutes of game action to get their first goal. It was scored by forward Derek Patrosso, after he was set up by defenseman Guy Dupuis.

Kolanos tied it 38 seconds into the second period for the Sundogs (2-1-0).

Goaltender Kevin Reiter stopped 31 of 33 shots, in his first game with the Komets since 2008. Nick Boucher was on the bench resting a groin injury. Arizona's Doug Groenestege stopped 28 of 29 shots.

The teams meet again at Tim's Toyota Center tonight.

Note: In the CHL, minor penalties during overtime are one minute long instead of two.
