Trick-or-treat times

Oct. 31 is Halloween, and in the coming week, many communities will allow children to scamper through neighborhoods in costume, trick-or-treating.

To make sure everyone makes it through Halloween with only fake tricks and horrors, the Indiana State Police offer these safety tips:

•Be sure trick-or-treaters not only are seen but also can see well on their own.

•Use makeup instead of masks to guarantee children unobstructed vision, which makes it easier for them to watch for traffic when crossing a road.

•Wear light colors or reflective tape to help boost a child’s visibility to passing motorists.

•Remind their children not to start eating candy until they get home and it is sorted – to ensure nothing hazardous made it into the bag.

•When making rounds, younger children should be with adults or older children, and routes should be planned.

•Children should only stop at familiar homes with lights on outside and should never enter the home of a stranger.
