The local holiday countdown officially began Monday with the carving of a 150-pound cheese Santa Claus at the Kroger on St. Joe Center Road.

Sarah Kaufmann, also known as the “Cheese Lady,” demonstrated her artistry at the newly remodeled grocery store as part of the Cincinnati-based retailer’s sneak preview before Thursday’s grand reopening.

Kroger is investing about $100 million over five years in the Fort Wayne market to replace and upgrade stores.

The company also owns and operates stores under the Scott’s Food and Pharmacy banner.
