Verbatim: 73-year-old ‘critical’ in Jefferson crash

Statement issued Monday:

Nature of Incident: Critical Injury Multi-Vehicle Accident

Date of Incident: November 15, 2010

Time of Incident: 12:51 p.m.

Location of Incident: 7500 block of W. Jefferson Blvd.

Victim: Male, Age 73 / Critical Condition

Details:

On Monday, November 15, 2010 at approximately 12:51 p.m. the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a report of a personal injury accident in the 7500 block of W. Jefferson Blvd. Officers arrived on the scene and located a 1999 green colored Mercury Villager (mini-van) that had collided head on with a 2003 maroon colored Pontiac Grand Am. The driver and sole occupant of the Mercury Villager, a seventy-three year old male, was unresponsive at the scene and determined to be in critical condition. He was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Pontiac Grand Am was also transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Witnesses reported to officers that the Mercury Villager was traveling east bound along W. Jefferson Blvd. when it collided with a 2011 blue colored Kia Soul forcing the Kia Soul into the median. Witnesses further reported to officers that the Mercury Villager continued traveling east bound and struck a second vehicle, a tan colored 1994 Chevy Astro van, forcing that vehicle into a ditch where it rolled over onto its top. Officers learned that the Mercury Villager continued east bound, crossed the median of W. Jefferson Blvd., and collided head on with the Pontiac Grand Am that was traveling west bound before coming to a rest in the west bound lanes of the 7500 block of W. Jefferson Blvd.

The occupants of both the Kia Soul and the Chevy Astro were all reported to be in fair condition at the scene and transported to a local hospital. Further, all occupants of all vehicles were reported to have proper restraint systems in place and in use. At this time, a primary cause for the accident has not been identified, however investigators are not ruling out a medical condition as a factor in the accident.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Allen County Crash Team (F.A.C.T.).
