Suspect held in arson, murder of infant, mother

INDIANAPOLIS – Prosecutors say an Indianapolis man smothered his former girlfriend and then set fire to their infant daughter while she was still alive.

Joshwa Carlisle of Lawrence was being held without bond Wednesday in the Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of murder and arson. A court hearing was set for Wednesday.

The Indianapolis Star reported that the 22-year-old Carlisle was arrested Monday in the Sept. 19 deaths of 25-year-old Tracie Shannon and 9-month-old Juliana Shannon.

Investigators said they found signs two fires had been set, one in the doorway of the woman’s bedroom and one in the baby’s crib.

The Star said Carlisle is married but is believed to have had a relationship with Shannon.
