Kyle Mathewson ended his last football season for Churubusco the only way it could have ended, by moving the chains and helping the Eagles get to the shadow of the Lafayette Central Catholic goal even as the final seconds ran out in his final game.
He finished with 175 yards rushing, caught a pass for a touchdown and threw a pass for a touchdown. And left his coach, Lee Etzler, with fewer memories now than he’ll have later.
“I’ll remember a lot next year when we’re not handing the ball off to him,” Etzler said.
“He’s an extremely gifted athlete, and if we don’t have him in a game like this we are not able to move the ball,” he went on. “He still might have been the best athlete on the field tonight, and (Central Catholic) has some tremendous athletes.”
