Ruffer gets it done on, off field

Notre Dame kicker David Ruffer has gotten it done on the field and in the class room this season.

The former walk-on, who is a perfect 15 for 15 on field goal attempts this year and 20 for 20 for his career, was named to the first-team ESPN Academic All-America football team Tuesday.

Ruffer is also a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is presented to the top college place kicker. The senior is competing with Oklahoma State's Dan Bailey and Southern Miss' Danny Hrapmann for the award, and the winner will be announced Dec. 9 during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
