Saints on tough run

INDIANAPOLIS – Bishop Dwenger seems to be all about the streaks, and unfortunately one continued Saturday in the Class 4A state football championship at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Saints, holders of a 36-game SAC winning streak, fell to Cathedral 31-20 in the 4A title game.

“They played their hearts out, and they never quit. I am very proud of them,” Dwenger coach Chris Svarczkopf said.

It is the fourth straight time Dwenger has lost in the state finals. The Saints have also finished second in 1996, 2002, 2008 and 2010 – the last three times in 4A.

The last two defeats have been to Cathedral, which beat Dwenger 10-7 two years ago.

The five-time defending SAC champion Saints will lose 30 seniors off a team which has enjoyed undefeated regular seasons in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
