INDIANAPOLIS – It’s hard to believe it has been almost two decades since the Bishop Dwenger football team celebrated a state championship.
The Saints have three state titles – all in 3A – in 1983, 1990 and 1991.
The program, which has dominated the SAC the last five years, has been snake bit at the state finals.
Three times Dwenger has been back to the big stage, only to be turned away for the title in 1996 in 3A and 2002 and 2008 in 4A.
The Saints are hoping a rematch with Cathedral on Saturday will be the one that breaks the bad luck in the 4A state championship at Lucas Oil Field.
The Irish beat Dwenger in the 2008 4A title game 10-7.
The two teams also met in the 1991 3A title game, with the Saints winning that game 34-27.
It has been tantalizingly close for Dwenger, as it lost the 2002 4A state championship 24-21 to Roncalli and the 1996 3A game to Zionsville, 14-7.
Dwenger has been second in the state four times, including a 35-18 loss to Carmel in the 3A game.
