Brey wins in Round 1

Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey just can’t stop winning.

Brey, whose team has started the season 8-0, advanced to the second round of the “Shot from the Heart” free-throw tournament.

Brey beat LaSalle’s John Giannini 27-20. Both coaches had 25 free throws. Brey sank all but three of his shots, and Giannini missed eight.

Brey will go against Tulane’s Ed Conroy in the second round.

Coaches and assistant coaches are participating in the season-long contest at different dates in an effort to create an understanding and awareness for the fight against heart disease and to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Irish assistant coach Martin Ingelsby didn’t make it out of the first round. He had 28 points, missing three free throws.

Holy Cross’ Dan Englestad defeated Inglesby with 30 points, missing one free throw.
