Verbatim: Miami Village Mobile Home Park explosion death

Written statement issued Friday morning: The Office of Sheriff Whitley County, released information related to the chemical explosion death at Miami Village Mobile Home Park.

On Friday, December 3, 2010 at 1 am, a resident of Miami Village Mobile Home Park (4614 E. Old Trail Road, Columbia City) called the Whitley County Sheriff's Department reporting injuries to the female resident at Lot 65. Deputy Jason Spencer was the first to arrive at the scene and entered the mobile home through the front door. A strong chemical odor, possibly anhydrous ammonia, was detected by Deputy Spencer. Alecia L. Stine, 24 years old, was found dead on the master bedroom floor. Preliminary investigation indicates that a chemical explosion occurred in or near a glass container. The explosion sent chards of glass into the air striking the victim in the throat, neck and arm. It also appears the victim suffered chemical burns to her face. There was no fire in the mobile home.

The investigation continues by the Whitley County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Whitley County Coroner, Whitley County Board of Health and Union Township Fire Department.

Deputy Spencer was treated at a local hospital for respiratory irritation due to chemical inhalation.

An autopsy will be scheduled.
