Notre Dame will renew its football rivalry with Miami earlier than expected.
The Irish will play the Hurricanes in the Sun Bowl at 2 p.m. Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas, it was announced Sunday.
Notre Dame (7-5) and Miami (7-5) had one of the hottest rivalries in the 1980s and early 1990s when the series was dubbed the Catholics vs. the Convicts by Notre Dame students.
The two programs were set to renew the rivalry at Soldier Field in Chicago on Oct. 6, 2012. The teams will also play each otther on Oct. 8, 2016, in South Bend and Nov. 25, 2017 in Miami.
Now, fans will get a preview of the series at the end of the year.
Miami will be coached by Jeff Stoutland, who took over as interim coach after Randy Shannon was fired Nov. 27.
