Now come the tests

To say the mood was quite upbeat by the time that both IPFW basketball coaches left Memorial Coliseum on Saturday would be an understatement.

It was a great day to be a Mastodon, because the women's team came from behind to beat Detroit, 78-66, and then the men's team took apart Tennessee-Martin, 85-61.

Both programs are at an all-time high right now. The women have a 6-3 record, and appear to have climbed out of a shooting slump that cost them a home game against Southern Utah. The men are 7-2, and the 24-point win was the worst beating that UT-Martin has taken this year, even though it has played LSU and Memphis.

How long this euphoria will last remains to be seen, because both teams are about to encounter four-game road trips.

The men will be the first to go when they play at Valparaiso next Saturday, and then at Purdue Dec. 21. They will resume their Summit League schedule Dec. 28 at Oral Roberts, then stay south to play Centenary Dec. 30.

The women will play at Hampton on Dec. 19 and at Longwood two nights later, and they, too, will resume the Summit League schedule. The Mastodons will be at Oral Roberts on Dec. 29 and at Centenary on New Year's Eve.

Anything over a 2-2 record for both would be an accomplishment. We'll have to wait and see if that happens.
